Indonesia vs Vietnam
Indonesia gives you a real remote-work visa, but only if a company outside Indonesia employs you and you can show about USD 60,000 a year. Vietnam has no nomad visa at all, so most remote workers come in on an e-visa of up to 90 days and live in a grey area the rules never wrote for them. The choice is really Bali's busy nomad scene with a permit that names remote work, against Da Nang's easy, low-cost life on a workaround.
Side by side
| Indonesia | Vietnam | |
|---|---|---|
| Digital nomad visa | E33G Remote Worker Visa | No |
| Income requirement | At least USD 60,000/yr in salary or income, shown through a bank account (E33G remote worker visa) | No dedicated nomad visa, so no income floor. Most remote workers use the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days; the government fee is USD 25 single-entry or USD 50 multiple-entry (Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC). |
| Tax residency | You are a resident taxpayer once you spend more than 183 days in Indonesia within any 12 months, counted in one run or in pieces, with any part of a day counting as a whole day. Residents are taxed on worldwide income. The 4-year territorial regime for foreigners with certain expertise is reserved for foreign workers in listed job positions and for approved researchers, so E33G remote workers cannot use it. | Under the Personal Income Tax Law 109/2025/QH15 (in force 1 July 2026; its salary and business rules for residents apply from the 2026 tax year) you are resident if you are present in Vietnam for 183 days or more in a calendar year or in the 12 consecutive months from your first day in the country, or if you have a habitual residence there (a registered permanent residence or a rented home under a fixed-term lease). Residents are taxed on worldwide income, with salaries on a 5-bracket scale from 5% to 35%; non-residents pay a flat 20% on pay for work done in Vietnam, wherever it is paid. |
| Cost of living | Low | Low |
| Currency | IDR | VND |
| Healthcare | There is no reciprocal public healthcare agreement for foreigners, so comprehensive travel or expat health insurance including medical evacuation is essential. | There is no reciprocal healthcare agreement, so foreigners pay for care and private hospitals typically expect upfront payment. |
| Driving | A foreign licence alone is not enough; carry an International Driving Permit together with your home licence to drive legally. | Vietnam recognises International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention only, not the 1949 Geneva Convention. |
The bottom line
Both sit in our low cost band, so cost alone rarely settles it, though Bali's nomad hubs tend to price higher than Da Nang. On paper legitimacy Indonesia wins: the E33G is a one-year permit for people employed by a company abroad, but the immigration portal lists it as single entry and not extendable, so do not count on extending it. Vietnam offers no route built for nomads; its e-visa of up to 90 days is a short-stay visa, not a basis for living there. Tax bites in both once you settle: Indonesia counts you as resident past 183 days in any 12 months, Vietnam at 183 days or through a habitual residence such as a home on a fixed-term lease, and both then tax worldwide income (Vietnam's salary scale runs from 5% to 35%). Indonesia's four-year territorial regime for foreign experts does not cover E33G holders. These are estimates as checked, not advice, so confirm your own case with a professional.
Pick Indonesia if a company outside Indonesia employs you, you clear the roughly USD 60,000 income bar, and you want a one-year permit that actually names remote work, plus Bali's big, established nomad scene.
Pick Vietnam if you want low costs and an easy day-to-day in Da Nang, you are fine running on an e-visa of up to 90 days, and you can live without any formal remote-work status.
