France taxes you on your worldwide income if your tax home (domicile fiscal) stays there, broadly when your household, main home, main job or main economic interests are in France, so moving abroad alone may not end it. Once you genuinely settle elsewhere you are usually taxed only on French-source income, and tax treaties typically prevent paying twice through an exemption or a foreign tax credit, but treat any figures as estimates and check your situation.

If Spain still counts as your tax home (roughly 183+ days in the country in a year, or your main base of life and income sits there), Spain taxes your worldwide income at IRPF rates, so what you earn abroad usually counts too. The sting is softened by double-tax treaties and a foreign-tax credit, plus the Article 7.p exemption that can shelter work done abroad up to around 60,100 euros a year, but treat every figure as an estimate and check your own case before you file.

Italy generally treats you as a tax resident if for most of the year (roughly 183 days or more) your home, family or registration ties are here, and residents are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live. The relief is usually a foreign tax credit for tax already paid abroad, often shaped by Italy's double-taxation treaties, so the same income should not be taxed twice.

Canada taxes you on residency, not on holding the passport, so as long as the CRA still treats you as a resident (kept home, family or strong ties) you generally owe Canadian tax on your worldwide income. The relief is usually a foreign tax credit for tax you already paid abroad, often topped up by a tax treaty, though the exact amounts are only estimates until you check your own case.

If you stay an Australian resident for tax purposes, Australia generally taxes your worldwide income wherever you live, with residency turned on the moment your real home and ties are here (a continuous stay of roughly 6 months can be enough). To soften double tax, you can usually claim a Foreign Income Tax Offset for tax already paid abroad, capped at the Australian tax on that income, and treaties may help too, so treat these figures as estimates and check your own case.

If Brazil still counts you as tax-resident, usually triggered by a permanent visa, a temporary visa plus a job, or roughly 183 days in the country within any 12 months, the Receita Federal taxes your worldwide income, so you keep filing the annual return wherever you live. The relief is real but partial: tax paid abroad can normally be credited against what you owe in Brazil under a treaty or recognised reciprocity, so most people are not taxed twice on the same income.

Mexico taxes you on your worldwide income once you count as a tax resident, which usually means your main home or your center of life is here (very roughly, spending more than about 183 days a year can tip the balance). The good news is the SAT lets you credit foreign income tax you already paid, and Mexico's double-taxation treaties mean the same money should not normally be taxed twice.

Should you move to El Salvador?
El Salvador is the surprise story of Central America. A few years ago most people knew it only for gang violence. Today it actively courts remote workers and Bitcoin fans, and the pitch is not empty. It suits a specific person: someone who wants warm weather, Pacific surf, a low cost of living and a genuinely walkable capital, and who is comfortable being an early mover in a place still building its nomad infrastructure.
The main bases are San Salvador (the capital, where the coworking, hospitals and international flights sit), El Tunco and El Zonte on the coast (surf towns, the original “Bitcoin Beach”), and Santa Ana inland (colonial, cheaper, quieter). Most newcomers split time between the capital and the coast.
A realistic monthly budget for one person renting a modern one-bedroom is roughly $1,200 to $1,800, less if you live local and inland, more in a doorman building in a nice San Salvador neighborhood like Escalón or Santa Elena.
The honest trade-offs: English is limited outside tourism and business, so functional Spanish matters. Bureaucracy is slow. And the safety turnaround, real as it is, came from a “state of exception” that suspended some civil liberties and jailed tens of thousands, drawing serious human rights criticism, including reports of arbitrary arrests and deaths in custody (Wikipedia). Read the rest of this with that context.
Cost of living in El Salvador
El Salvador is cheap by North American and European standards, and it runs on the US dollar, so there is no exchange-rate math. Numbeo puts a single person’s monthly costs at around $700 excluding rent (Numbeo).
Rent is where the capital pulls ahead of the rest of the country. A one-bedroom in central San Salvador runs roughly $900 a month, around $770 outside the center; nationally those figures drop closer to $740 and $650 (Numbeo). Coastal surf towns swing hard by season, so budget generously if you want to be near the waves.
Groceries are modest: about $1.80 for a liter of milk, $2.70 for a dozen eggs, roughly $5.90 for a kilo of chicken breast. Eating out is a real perk: a simple local meal is about $7, and a three-course dinner for two at a mid-range spot runs around $43 (Numbeo). Utilities for a mid-size apartment land near $100 a month, though air conditioning in the coastal heat can push that higher.
El Salvador digital nomad visa, residency and the Freedom Visa
Here is the plain truth: El Salvador does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. If you are waiting for one, do not.
What most people actually do is enter as a tourist. Under the CA-4 agreement (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua), many nationalities get up to 90 days shared across the four countries combined, and some travelers pay a small tourist card fee on arrival (around $12, verify for your own passport). You can request an extension, but that clock is shared with the CA-4 neighbors, so a hop to Costa Rica or Mexico is the usual reset.
For staying longer, the real routes are ordinary temporary residency (through work, marriage, retirement or rentista income, or investment) processed by the immigration authority, the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería, and the headline program, the Freedom Visa. In December 2023 the government passed a law letting people effectively buy Salvadoran citizenship by contributing Bitcoin (or Tether) to the state (Wikipedia). It is marketed as a roughly $1 million investment, capped at a limited number of applicants per year, granting residency and citizenship. In other words, it is aimed at wealthy crypto investors, not working nomads.
Before you commit, run your nationality and situation through our digital nomad visa checker, and confirm the current rules directly with the immigration authority, because Central American entry policy shifts.
Tax residency and the 183 day rule
Two things make El Salvador unusual here, and both are worth understanding.
First, the threshold is not the famous 183 days. Under Salvadoran rules you generally become a tax resident if you stay more than 200 consecutive days in a calendar year, or if your main source of income is in the country (PwC). That extra buffer matters if you are counting days.
Second, El Salvador taxes on a territorial basis. It taxes income earned inside the country and other Salvadoran-source income, not your worldwide earnings, so foreign-source income of a resident generally falls outside the net (PwC). Local personal income tax is progressive up to about 30% on higher Salvadoran income, with a tax-free band on roughly the first $6,600.
None of this cancels your home country’s rules. US citizens are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live, and many countries keep taxing you until you properly break residency. Sketch your picture with our tax residency checker, then get a cross-border accountant before you move money or your tax home.
Healthcare and insurance
Public healthcare runs through the social security system (ISSS) for formal workers and the Ministry of Health for everyone else. It is free or near-free but stretched, and it is not what most foreigners rely on. Private care is the norm for expats and is inexpensive by US standards.
The private hospitals people name in San Salvador are Hospital de Diagnóstico and Hospital de la Mujer, with solid specialists and short waits. A private GP visit is roughly $30 to $60, paid out of pocket. Most nomads carry international health insurance or a travel-medical policy rather than buying into a local plan, and for anything major many still prefer to fly to a bigger hub. Confirm your policy actually lists El Salvador, and check for surfing or motorbike exclusions, which are common and very relevant here.
Money, banking and settling in
Because the country runs on the US dollar, day-to-day money is simple: no conversion, no wild inflation swings. Note that Bitcoin is no longer legal tender. El Salvador rescinded that status in January 2025 as part of an IMF agreement, so the dollar is again the sole official currency and crypto acceptance is now voluntary (Wikipedia).
Cards work fine in San Salvador malls, hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for the coast, markets and small towns. Opening a local bank account (Banco Agrícola, Banco Cuscatlán, Davivienda) as a foreigner is doable but usually wants residency and your DUI (the local ID) plus proof of income, so many newcomers lean on Wise or a good travel card for the first months.
Practical first-weeks advice: grab a local SIM (Tigo or Claro) on day one, base yourself in San Salvador or a surf town with proven coworking, learn enough Spanish to handle a landlord and a pharmacy, and treat the safety improvement as real but recent, which means ordinary city caution still applies. El Salvador rewards people who show up curious and grounded, not those expecting a finished nomad scene.
Figures are estimates. Always check the official source.
