Proof of Funds
Proof of funds is documentation showing you have enough money to support yourself for a set period, usually required when applying for a visa, residence permit, or border entry abroad.
When you move to another country, the authorities want to know you can pay your own way. Proof of funds is how you show it: a record that you hold enough money to cover your living costs without becoming a burden on the local system. It comes up most often during visa applications, residence permit processing, and sometimes at the border itself.
What counts varies a lot by country. Most commonly it means recent bank statements, a savings balance, or evidence of regular income. Some places accept a job contract or pension; others want to see a specific sum sitting untouched in your account. For a digital nomad visa, the requirement is usually framed as a monthly income figure rather than a lump sum, so check which form your destination expects before you gather paperwork. The catch people miss is the fine print around the money. Officials often want statements covering the last three to six months, in your own name, sometimes translated and stamped with an apostille. A balance you wired in last week can look like borrowed money and get bounced. Funds held jointly, in crypto, or in a company account may not count at all. Read the exact wording. “Enough money” is a legal test here, not a friendly suggestion.
General information, not advice — confirm with the official source or a qualified professional, since the amount, format, and accepted documents differ by country and change over time.

- At passport control, where a border officer may ask to see funds or a return ticket before letting you in.
- Gathering and translating six months of bank statements for an immigration lawyer or consulate appointment.
