Visiting

You need a visa, arranged at a consulate before you travel. Plan ahead: gather the documents, book the appointment, and allow time for processing.

Passport validity:Passport generally valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.

Heads-up:An online tourist e-visa was introduced around March 2026 for arrivals via Kabul International Airport, replacing the embassy-only process for many travellers.

At the border:Valid passport, an approved visa or e-visa, and proof of onward arrangements; visas must be issued by the current authorities to be accepted.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are generally treated as a resident if you are domiciled in Afghanistan or present for 183 days or more in the tax year, and residents are in principle taxed on worldwide income while non-residents are taxed only on Afghan-source income.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:AFN. Cost of living:low.

Healthcare:Foreigners rely on a small number of private clinics in Kabul that usually require cash payment up front, facilities are very limited and medical evacuation insurance is strongly advised.

Driving:An International Driving Permit alongside your home licence is advisable, though most foreign visitors use hired drivers given security conditions.
