Visiting

You can get a visa on arrival. Carry the fee and the documents the border asks for, and confirm the current rules before you fly.

Passport validity:Passport valid for at least six months on arrival

Heads-up:Visa on arrival for most nationalities was suspended around March 2025 in favour of an eVisa applied for in advance; the Kurdistan Region runs a separate visa-on-arrival scheme.

At the border:eVisa or visa confirmation, passport, and proof of accommodation address in Iraq

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are generally treated as a tax resident if you stay in Iraq for four continuous months, or six months scattered across the fiscal year; residents are taxed on worldwide income while non-residents are taxed only on Iraq-sourced income.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:IQD. Cost of living:mid.

Healthcare:There is no reliable public option for foreigners, so most rely on private clinics in Erbil or Baghdad and comprehensive international insurance with medical evacuation is considered essential.

Driving:An International Driving Permit alongside your home licence is recommended and is usually required by car rental firms; long-term residents are expected to obtain an Iraqi licence.
