Visiting

You can get a visa on arrival. Carry the fee and the documents the border asks for, and confirm the current rules before you fly.

Passport validity:Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure.

At the border:A 30-day visa on arrival is available at Bujumbura airport and land borders for about USD 90 at officer discretion; bring a yellow fever vaccination certificate (WHO card), onward or return travel, accommodation booking and proof of funds.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are generally treated as tax resident if your tax domicile, main professional activity or invested capital is in Burundi; residents are taxed on worldwide income while non-residents are taxed only on Burundi-source income (estimate, confirm with the OBR).(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:BIF. Cost of living:low.

Healthcare:Public healthcare is very limited and most facilities expect cash upfront, so foreigners should carry private international insurance covering private clinics and medical evacuation to Nairobi, Kigali or beyond.

Driving:An International Driving Permit plus third-party insurance is strongly recommended alongside your home licence, especially outside Bujumbura.
