Visiting

You need a visa, arranged at a consulate before you travel. Plan ahead: gather the documents, book the appointment, and allow time for processing.

Passport validity:Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date.

Heads-up:A presidential decree signed on 18 April 2025 is expected to introduce electronic visas and ease the letter-of-invitation requirement, but no firm launch date is confirmed.

At the border:Letter of invitation plus visa, a migration fee (around 14 US dollars) and a tourism tax (around 2 US dollars per day) paid in cash, and registration with the State Migration Service within 3 working days if staying longer.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

Spending 183 days or more in the country in a tax period generally makes you a tax resident, and residents are taxed on worldwide income (estimated flat rate around 10 percent) while non-residents are taxed only on Turkmen-source income.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:TMT. Cost of living:mid.

Healthcare:Medical care for foreigners is limited and well below Western standards, so comprehensive private insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly advised.

Driving:Visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and longer-term residents must obtain a local Turkmen licence.
