Should you move to Malaysia?

If you want Southeast Asia without the steep learning curve, Malaysia is a soft landing. Kuala Lumpur gives you fast fibre, English almost everywhere, and a skyline of co-working cafes, while Penang and Langkawi trade speed for beaches and slower mornings. Your money stretches a long way here, so even a modest remote salary feels comfortable, and the food alone is worth the move.

Malaysia digital nomad visa and entry

Malaysia runs a real remote-work route, the DE Rantau Nomad Pass, managed by MDEC. It lets you stay between 3 and 24 months. Tech and digital workers usually need to show around $24,000 a year. Non-tech roles face a steeper bar, closer to $60,000, and freelancers have to prove active client contracts. The catch worth knowing: the pass is for foreign income, so you cannot take on Malaysian clients while you hold it. Plenty of people land on a regular tourist entry first and apply once they are here, so sort out which category fits your work before you book.

Tax residency and what to check

The trigger is physical presence. Stay 182 days or more in a calendar year and you are likely a tax resident. Malaysia has long gone easy on foreign-source income, and as a resident individual your overseas earnings can stay exempt through 2036, provided they were already taxed at source and you declare them properly. Conditions do shift, though, so do not assume the door stays open forever. Treat any figure here as an estimate and confirm your own situation with LHDN.
