Visiting

You need a visa, arranged at a consulate before you travel. Plan ahead: gather the documents, book the appointment, and allow time for processing.

Passport validity:Passport generally valid for at least 6 months, with the e-visa tied to passport validity.

Heads-up:Mali suspended visa issuance to U.S. citizens from 1 January 2026; re-check before travel.

At the border:Valid passport and pre-arranged visa (most nationalities apply online before travel); ECOWAS and some neighbouring nationals are visa-exempt.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are generally treated as a tax resident if your habitual home is in Mali or you spend more than 183 days in the country in a year, and residents are taxed on worldwide income (relief may apply under double tax treaties).(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:XOF. Cost of living:low.

Healthcare:Public facilities are very limited outside Bamako and you pay upfront, so comprehensive private insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended for foreigners.

Driving:Carry an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, as it is widely expected by car hire firms and at the frequent road checkpoints.
