Visiting

You can get a visa on arrival. Carry the fee and the documents the border asks for, and confirm the current rules before you fly.

Passport validity:Passport valid for at least 6 months on arrival, with a blank page.

Heads-up:Since 5 January 2025 visa on arrival is no longer available; most visa-required travellers must obtain an e-visa online before travelling.

At the border:Passport, e-visa or visa where required, proof of sufficient funds, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are generally a tax resident if you keep a permanent home in Mauritania, have your main residence or centre of interests there, or carry on a professional activity there; residents are taxed on worldwide income, though foreign income already taxed elsewhere is generally not taxed again.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:MRU. Cost of living:mid.

Healthcare:Public facilities are basic, especially outside Nouakchott, so comprehensive private cover with medical evacuation is essential for foreigners.

Driving:An International Driving Permit alongside your home licence is recommended, and a 4x4 is advisable for most travel outside the main cities.
