France taxes you on your worldwide income if your tax home (domicile fiscal) stays there, broadly when your household, main home, main job or main economic interests are in France, so moving abroad alone may not end it. If Spain still counts as your tax home (roughly 183+ days in the country in a year, or your main base of life and income sits there), Spain taxes your worldwide income at IRPF rates, so what you earn abroad usually counts too. The sting is softened by double-tax treaties and a foreign-tax credit, plus the Article 7.p exemption that can shelter work done abroad up to around 60,100 euros a year, but treat every figure as an estimate and check your own case before you file.

Italy generally treats you as a tax resident if for most of the year (roughly 183 days or more) your home, family or registration ties are here, and residents are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live. The relief is usually a foreign tax credit for tax already paid abroad, often shaped by Italy's double-taxation treaties, so the same income should not be taxed twice.

If you stay an Australian resident for tax purposes, Australia generally taxes your worldwide income wherever you live, with residency turned on the moment your real home and ties are here (a continuous stay of roughly 6 months can be enough). To soften double tax, you can usually claim a Foreign Income Tax Offset for tax already paid abroad, capped at the Australian tax on that income, and treaties may help too, so treat these figures as estimates and check your own case.

If Brazil still counts you as tax-resident, usually triggered by a permanent visa, a temporary visa plus a job, or roughly 183 days in the country within any 12 months, the Receita Federal taxes your worldwide income, so you keep filing the annual return wherever you live. Mexico taxes you on your worldwide income once you count as a tax resident, which usually means your main home or your center of life is here (very roughly, spending more than about 183 days a year can tip the balance). Should you move to Namibia?
Most people picture Namibia as a safari on a bucket list, not a place to answer work emails. That is exactly why it is interesting. It is one of the least crowded countries on earth, the internet in the cities is better than the emptiness of the map suggests, and in 2022 it became one of the first African nations to open a proper digital nomad visa. If you want space, big skies, and a slower rhythm than a European capital, it rewards you.
Windhoek, the capital, is where you will base yourself for anything administrative: banks, hospitals, reliable fibre, a small but real cafe-and-coworking scene. Swakopmund, on the coast, is the other favourite, a cool, breezy, oddly German-feeling town wedged between the Atlantic and the dunes, popular with people who want walkable calm over city bustle. For a single person living comfortably but not lavishly, budget roughly USD 1,200 to 1,800 a month all in, more if you rent furnished and eat out often.
The trade-offs are honest ones. English is the official language and widely spoken, so you will not struggle to get by, but this is a small economy: imported goods are pricey, some services are slow, and load-shedding style power interruptions can happen. Distances are enormous, so you really want a car. Petty crime exists in Windhoek, as in any city, so normal urban caution applies. This suits the self-sufficient, nature-first remote worker far more than someone who needs nightlife and same-day everything.
Cost of living in Namibia
Namibia is affordable by Western standards but not the rock-bottom bargain some of Southeast Asia offers, and Windhoek is pricier than the countryside. On Numbeo, Windhoek carries a cost-of-living index well below most European cities, with rent the biggest saving.
A one-bedroom apartment in a central, safe part of Windhoek runs roughly USD 400 to 800 a month, dropping toward USD 250 to 400 in outer suburbs, per recent cost-of-living data. Furnished places carry a premium of around 15 to 20 percent, and unfurnished is the norm, so factor in setup costs if you are staying only six months. Groceries for one person land around USD 150 to 220 a month if you buy local: beef, game meat, and fresh produce are genuinely cheap, while imported cheese, cereal, and wine can cost 30 to 50 percent more than at home. Eating out is reasonable, with a solid restaurant meal often around USD 8 to 15. Treat all of these as ranges, not promises, and verify current prices before you commit.
Namibia digital nomad visa and entry
This is the clear route, and it is refreshingly straightforward. The official Namibia Digital Nomad Visa, run by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, grants a six-month stay for people who work remotely for clients or employers based outside Namibia.
The headline requirement is income: around USD 2,000 a month for the main applicant, plus roughly USD 1,000 for an accompanying spouse and about USD 500 per child, evidenced with payslips or a contract and a six-month bank statement. You will also need a valid passport, proof of health or travel insurance covering your stay, a police clearance from your home country, a medical certificate, and an employer or motivation letter. The application fee is around NAD 3,300, payable on arrival. One catch worth knowing: the visa is non-renewable, and you generally have to wait 12 months after it expires before reapplying, so it is a season, not a permanent base. Rules and figures change, so confirm the current requirements on the official page and run your own situation through our digital nomad visa checker before you book flights.
Tax residency and the 183 day rule
Here is the part that makes Namibia unusually friendly for a remote worker, at least on paper. Namibia runs a source-based tax system, which means it taxes income earned from Namibian sources and, as a rule, does not tax foreign-source income, according to PwC’s tax summary. If your clients and salary sit entirely abroad, that income is typically outside the Namibian net.
The 183-day idea still matters, but differently from many countries. Namibia does track physical presence, and spending 183 days or more in a tax year (which runs March to February) can affect how you are treated. The twist is that being in Namibia does not automatically pull in your foreign earnings, because the system keys off where income arises, not where you live. That said, your home country may still consider you tax resident, and double-tax rules vary, so this is educational, not advice. Talk to a qualified adviser about your specific mix of citizenship, income, and days, and use our tax residency checker as a first orientation. Personal rates in Namibia run progressively up to around 37 percent, but that only bites on locally sourced income.
Healthcare and insurance
Namibia has a two-tier system: public facilities that are stretched and under-resourced, and private hospitals that are genuinely good and where nomads will want to be. In Windhoek the main private options are Lady Pohamba Private Hospital and Rhino Park Private Hospital, both modern and used to insured patients. Private care here has been reported as noticeably cheaper than comparable hospitals in Johannesburg, though you still pay real money without cover.
Do not rely on public healthcare as a foreigner. Comprehensive private insurance is effectively mandatory anyway, since the visa requires proof of it. Many residents use Namibian medical aids such as those tariffed under NAMAF, but as a short-stay nomad an international health insurance policy that covers Namibia and includes evacuation is usually the simpler, safer choice. Budget for it as a fixed monthly cost and read the fine print on what counts as an emergency.
Money, banking and settling in
Opening a local bank account as a short-term nomad is possible but slow, and honestly often unnecessary for a six-month stay. The main banks are First National Bank (FNB) Namibia, Bank Windhoek, Standard Bank, and Nedbank. Expect to bring your passport, proof of a Namibian address, and proof of income, to attend in person, and to wait one to two weeks or longer as a non-resident.
For most people, a good multi-currency card (Wise, Revolut, or similar) plus a couple of home-country cards will carry you fine. The Namibian dollar is pegged one-to-one to the South African rand, and rand notes are accepted everywhere, which makes budgeting simple. Cards work in cities and larger shops, but carry cash for fuel stops, small towns, and markets. In your first weeks, prioritise three things: a reliable SIM (MTC is the main network), a rental car or a bought-and-resold vehicle if you are staying the full six months, and a home base with a tested fibre or LTE connection before you sign anything. Do that, and the rest of Namibia opens up.
Figures are estimates. Always check the official source.
