France taxes you on your worldwide income if your tax home (domicile fiscal) stays there, broadly when your household, main home, main job or main economic interests are in France, so moving abroad alone may not end it. Once you genuinely settle elsewhere you are usually taxed only on French-source income, and tax treaties typically prevent paying twice through an exemption or a foreign tax credit, but treat any figures as estimates and check your situation.

If Spain still counts as your tax home (roughly 183+ days in the country in a year, or your main base of life and income sits there), Spain taxes your worldwide income at IRPF rates, so what you earn abroad usually counts too. The sting is softened by double-tax treaties and a foreign-tax credit, plus the Article 7.p exemption that can shelter work done abroad up to around 60,100 euros a year, but treat every figure as an estimate and check your own case before you file.

Italy generally treats you as a tax resident if for most of the year (roughly 183 days or more) your home, family or registration ties are here, and residents are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live. The relief is usually a foreign tax credit for tax already paid abroad, often shaped by Italy's double-taxation treaties, so the same income should not be taxed twice.

Canada taxes you on residency, not on holding the passport, so as long as the CRA still treats you as a resident (kept home, family or strong ties) you generally owe Canadian tax on your worldwide income. If you stay an Australian resident for tax purposes, Australia generally taxes your worldwide income wherever you live, with residency turned on the moment your real home and ties are here (a continuous stay of roughly 6 months can be enough). To soften double tax, you can usually claim a Foreign Income Tax Offset for tax already paid abroad, capped at the Australian tax on that income, and treaties may help too, so treat these figures as estimates and check your own case.

If Brazil still counts you as tax-resident, usually triggered by a permanent visa, a temporary visa plus a job, or roughly 183 days in the country within any 12 months, the Receita Federal taxes your worldwide income, so you keep filing the annual return wherever you live. Mexico taxes you on your worldwide income once you count as a tax resident, which usually means your main home or your center of life is here (very roughly, spending more than about 183 days a year can tip the balance). The good news is the SAT lets you credit foreign income tax you already paid, and Mexico's double-taxation treaties mean the same money should not normally be taxed twice.

If you stay a resident citizen, the Philippines taxes your worldwide income, but once you genuinely live and work abroad you usually count as a non-resident citizen and are taxed only on income from Philippine sources. Should you move to Oman?
Oman is the Gulf without the noise. If Dubai feels like a permanent sales pitch, Muscat is the opposite: low buildings, long coastlines, mountains an hour from the sea, and a pace that lets you breathe. It suits remote workers who want tax-light Gulf life, real safety, and genuine nature over nightlife and skyscrapers. It suits couples and families more than party-seekers, and it rewards people who plan around the heat.
Most newcomers land in Muscat, the capital, where the expat scene clusters around Al Mouj (the marina district), Qurum, and Al Khuwair. Beyond the capital, Salalah in the far south draws people for its cooler monsoon season, and Sohar and Nizwa are quieter, cheaper options. A single person can live comfortably in Muscat on roughly OMR 900 to 1,200 a month (around 2,300 to 3,100 USD), and more modestly on OMR 600 to 800 if you cook at home and skip the marina, according to local cost breakdowns from Mirabello Consultancy.
The honest trade-offs: summer is brutal, with June to September regularly topping 40C and heavy humidity on the coast, so you live inside air conditioning for months. There is no dedicated nomad visa, so your legal footing takes real thought (more on that below). Public life is conservative, alcohol is restricted to licensed venues and permit holders, and internet video calling has historically been throttled, so budget for a VPN and test your work setup early. English is widely spoken in business and cities, but Arabic still smooths the paperwork.
Cost of living in Oman
Oman is cheaper than the UAE or Qatar, though not the bargain it once was. Rent is the swing factor. Cost-of-living tracker Expatistan puts Muscat well below Dubai overall, and local figures line up: a studio runs roughly OMR 150 to 300 a month, a one-bedroom around OMR 250 to 450, and a two-bedroom OMR 400 to 700. Marina and villa living in Al Mouj or Madinat Sultan Qaboos climbs to OMR 700 to 1,500 and beyond. Moving 20 to 30 minutes out of the center can cut rent by a third.
Groceries sit at moderate Gulf prices: imported Western brands are pricey, but local produce, rice, dates, and fish are cheap. Expect somewhere around OMR 150 to 250 a month for one person eating mostly at home. A casual meal out runs OMR 3 to 6, a mid-range dinner for two closer to OMR 15 to 25. Petrol is famously cheap, which matters because Oman is built for cars and public transport is thin, so most people budget for a vehicle. These are ballpark ranges, not quotes, so price your own neighborhood before you sign anything.
Oman Golden Visa and entry
Here is the part to get right: Oman has no digital nomad visa. If someone sells you one, walk away. What Oman relaunched, effective 31 August 2025, is a two-tier Golden Visa (investor residency), summarized by Deloitte Middle East and Mirabello. The top tier grants 10-year residency for investments from around OMR 500,000 (in property, a company, or government bonds); a second tier gives 5-year residency from roughly OMR 250,000. That is real capital, aimed at investors and retirees, not freelancers.
For most remote workers the realistic routes are two. First, an employment visa, tied to a specific Omani employer and valid for two years, which is the standard path if you take a local job. Second, and more common for genuine nomads, you simply visit: Oman’s Royal Oman Police issues a one-year multiple-entry tourist eVisa for around OMR 50, with each stay capped at 30 days, applied for at the official ROP eVisa portal. That lets you sample Oman legally without pretending to be a resident, but it is not a work-and-settle solution and it does not make you tax resident. Before you commit, run your own situation through our digital nomad visa checker to see which route actually fits your passport and plans.
Tax residency and the 183 day rule
Oman’s headline draw is simple: there is currently no personal income tax on individuals, whether you are Omani or a resident foreigner. That is the real reason the Gulf pulls remote workers.
Two caveats matter. First, this is changing. Oman has passed a Personal Income Tax Law that, per EY, is expected to take effect from 1 January 2028, applying a 5% rate only on income above roughly OMR 42,000 a year. Second, staying long enough makes you a tax resident: PwC’s tax summaries confirm that anyone present in Oman for more than 183 days in a year, continuous or not, is treated as tax resident. Today that mostly changes your paperwork rather than your bill, but it is the number that governs where you owe tax, and your home country may still tax you regardless. This is educational, not advice: cross 183 days in Oman and you may also cross a line back home. Sanity-check your own case with our tax residency checker, and talk to a cross-border accountant before you move money or count days.
Healthcare and insurance
Oman’s public system is solid for citizens but not the plan for foreigners. Since the phased rollout of the mandatory Dhamani scheme, private-sector employers must provide expat health cover with a basic annual limit around OMR 4,500, as Pacific Prime explains. If you are self-employed or on a tourist eVisa, that safety net does not apply to you, so an international policy is essential.
In Muscat, the private hospitals expats consistently name are Muscat Private Hospital, Starcare, and Badr Al Samaa. Care is good, but facilities often expect payment upfront and costs climb fast, so real insurance is non-negotiable. A private GP consultation runs roughly OMR 15 to 30. Comprehensive international expat cover typically starts a few hundred OMR a year for a young single person and rises steeply with age and coverage, so get quotes for your own profile rather than trusting a headline figure.
Money, banking and settling in
Banking in Oman is the friction point, and it hinges on your visa. To open a personal account at a local bank like Bank Muscat or the National Bank of Oman, you generally need an Omani resident card, a passport, proof of local address, and often a salary certificate or employer letter. Without residency, most banks will turn you away, though a few (Sohar International has been reported to) open accounts for foreign property buyers. Expect an in-branch visit to sign, and one to three days to activate, longer if KYC checks run deep.
Practical first weeks: keep a strong home-country card and a multi-currency account like Wise or Revolut for the gap before a local account exists, because that gap can last months. Cards are accepted in cities but carry cash for taxis, souqs, and smaller towns. Get a local SIM (Omantel or Ooredoo) on day one, sort a car early since transport is car-dependent, and plan anything official around the Friday to Saturday weekend and prayer times. Oman rewards patience: the bureaucracy is slower than you expect, but the people are famously kind, and once you are set up the quality of life is hard to beat.
