Visiting

You need an e-visa. Apply online before you travel and carry the approval. It is usually quick, but leave a few days of buffer.

Passport validity:Passport generally valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date

At the border:Printed e-visa approval letter and a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (required for travellers aged 1 and over); visas are not issued on arrival and must be obtained online beforehand.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are generally treated as resident if you have a permanent home in Uganda, are present 183 days or more in a 12 month period, or average 122 days a year over three years; residents are taxed on worldwide income, so foreign income may be reportable.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:UGX. Cost of living:low.

Healthcare:Healthcare is not free and is generally paid upfront; care is concentrated in Kampala, so comprehensive international insurance with medical evacuation is strongly recommended for foreigners.

Driving:Short stay visitors can usually drive on a home licence together with an International Driving Permit, and both should be carried; longer stays require converting to a Ugandan permit.
