Visiting

You need a visa, arranged at a consulate before you travel. Plan ahead: gather the documents, book the appointment, and allow time for processing.

Passport validity:Passport must be machine readable and valid for at least 6 months from the e-visa application date, with blank pages for stamps.

Heads-up:Since August 2025 the unified e-visa is valid 120 days with a maximum stay of 30 days; check for further updates before travel.

At the border:Approved e-visa (printed or on phone), valid passport and travel medical insurance valid in Russia.

Working remotely

No dedicated nomad visa; the usual route is a standard residence permit.

Tax and residency

You are a tax resident if present in Russia at least 183 days within any rolling 12 month period; residents are taxed on worldwide income, while non-residents are generally taxed only on Russian-source income.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:RUB. Cost of living:mid.

Healthcare:Foreigners are expected to rely on private medical insurance, which is required for most visas and must be valid throughout Russia for the whole stay.

Driving:An International Driving Permit is recommended because a foreign licence not in Cyrillic should be accompanied by an IDP or an official Russian translation.
