Turkey: visas, tax & cost of living

Turkey runs a real digital nomad visa (about $3,000/mo). Pass 183 days and you're a tax resident, though a new 20-year break can shelter foreign income.

Visiting

Visa-free for up to 90 days. Travel on a passport valid for your whole stay, with a return or onward ticket and proof you can support yourself.

Passport validity:Most passports need at least six months of validity beyond arrival plus a blank page, but UK passports specifically must be valid at least 150 days after arrival with one blank page.

Heads-up:Turkey recently moved ordinary US and full British citizen passport holders to full visa exemption for short stays, so the old paid e-visa is no longer needed for them.

At the border:Visa-free visitors mainly need a valid passport with a blank page, while consulate sticker-visa applicants are typically asked for onward flights, accommodation bookings, bank statements and travel insurance.

Working remotely

Digital Nomad Identification Certificate.

Income needed:~$3,000/mo foreign income (GoTurkiye Digital Nomad Visa, age 21-55, degree required)(estimate)

Who qualifies:Applicants must be a citizen of an eligible country, aged about 21 to 55, hold a university degree, work remotely for a company or clients outside Turkey, hold valid health insurance, and show foreign income of around USD 3,000 a month.

183 days/calendar year triggers worldwide-income tax; Law 7582 (2026) can exempt foreign income up to 20yrs for new residents(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Double-tax treaty:yes, in force since 1988

Practical

Currency:TRY. Cost of living:low.

Healthcare:There is no reciprocal public healthcare agreement for foreign visitors, so you pay for care and should carry comprehensive medical travel insurance.

Driving:An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your home licence for driving in Turkey.

Should you move to Turkey?

Big-city energy, deep history, a weak lira that stretches your money: Turkey delivers all three. Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya are the usual nomad bases, the cafe wifi is quick, and your dollars or euros go a long way. One honest caveat, though. Inflation runs hot here, so prices move fast and a comfortable month today may cost noticeably more next year.

Turkey visa and entry

Good news: Turkey does run a real digital nomad visa, applied for through the GoTurkiye platform. It’s open to many EU, UK, US and other nationalities, roughly ages 21 to 55. You’ll generally need a university degree, a remote job or clients based outside Turkey, and proof of around $3,000 a month in foreign income. The permit lasts up to a year and you can renew it. Check your own passport’s eligibility and the exact document list before you apply, since both vary by nationality.

Tax residency and what to check

Spend more than six months (around 183 days) in Turkey in a calendar year and you generally become a tax resident on your worldwide income. Here’s the interesting part. A 2026 law (No. 7582) can exempt foreign-sourced income from Turkish tax for up to 20 years, but only for newcomers who had no Turkish tax residency in the prior three years and who meet the conditions. It’s a genuinely attractive break if you qualify, so treat both the 183-day trigger and the exemption as estimates and confirm your own case with a Turkish tax adviser.
