Visiting

Visa-free for up to 90 days. Travel on a passport valid for your whole stay, with a return or onward ticket and proof you can support yourself.

Passport validity:Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure and issued within the last 10 years.

Heads-up:ETIAS pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers is expected in late 2026; the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is operational at Icelandic borders since 2026.

At the border:Passport, proof of onward or return travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation details may be requested.

Working remotely

Long-term visa for remote workers.

Income needed:about ISK 1,000,000 per month (about ISK 1,300,000 with a spouse or partner)(estimate)

Duration:6months

Fee:about ISK 12,200(estimate)

Who qualifies:Non-EEA/EFTA nationals working remotely for a non-Icelandic employer or clients, staying temporarily.

Tax and residency

Staying more than 183 days in a 12-month period generally makes you a tax resident taxed on worldwide income; non-residents are taxed only on Icelandic-source income.(estimate)

The UK decides residence with its Statutory Residence Test (days in the UK plus your ties). As a non-resident you are usually taxed only on UK income; where one exists, a double-tax treaty with the destination decides who taxes what.

Practical

Currency:ISK. Cost of living:high.

Healthcare:Public healthcare requires legal residence and registration; new arrivals usually face a waiting period and need private cover meanwhile.

Driving:EEA/EU licences are valid; many non-EEA visitors can drive on their home licence short-term, but an International Driving Permit is a useful backup.
